`Who Broke the Baby`?
Dr Jean Garton tells the story of how she was putting the finishing touches to a presentation she was planning to give to medical students the following day. She was reviewing the slides she had planned to use when there appeared on the screen the image of an abortion victim aged 2 ½ months in growth. The child’s body had been dismembered by a long handled knife in a D & C (dilation and curettage) abortion procedure. At that moment she suddenly heard the voice of another person behind her. She gave a sharp intake of breath as she looked round to see her 3 year old youngest son wiping sleep from his eyes.
His small voice was filled with genuine sadness as he innocently asked the question,
“Who broke the baby”?
That question has stuck with me for many years. It reminds us of the fact that abortions are to do with children and not just choices, as is popularly advocated today.
`Roll Up, Roll Up`!
Recent legislation in our own country which will allow private abortion clinics to begin advertising on national television and radio from 30th April 2012 seems hard to comprehend.
That our government would allow such a law to be passed underlines the fact that abortion clinics operate as business’s and not services for women in need.
A spokesman for The Broadcast Committee of Advertising Practice (BCAP) said, "There is not going to be some sort of free-for-all saying 'Come to us to get an abortion'".
In the light of recent legislation in the loosening of gambling laws and what they have brought about in our country, I find these promises hard to swallow, let alone believe.
How can God forgive us for this?
Since the passing of the 1967 Abortion Act in England and Wales the number of abortions has been on the rise almost every year.
The numbers range from 49,829 in 1969 (when the abortion rate was first calculated) to its highest figure of 198,499 in 2007.
The last 4 years have seen figures just short of that number.
The reality is countless millions of defenceless lives have been destroyed by the power of an argument that says, life does not begin until that living child makes a journey of 7 inches down a birth canal.
I remember the outpouring of grief the day of the Dunblane massacre when 16 children and 1 adult were gunned down on 13 March 1996.
The genuine shock and horror on that particular day was unprecedented at that time.
And yet during that same week many thousands of abortions were carried out all over the United Kingdom and not one word of sorrow or grief was heard.
This is by no means meant to take away from the hurt suffered by many associated with the loss or harm in Dunblane.
But how can God forgive such hypocrisy?
Jeremiah 5:7 "How shall I pardon you for this?"
The bizarre reality is we are part of a society that pleads with us to save the trees, but then kills the children.

What Can We Do?
Simply spewing out condemnations seems too predictable and unprofitable.
There are means today that we can give ourselves to that can be more productive.
First of all we need to be very sensitive to mothers who have gone through with an abortion.
We must remember with abortion no-one is really the winner. Abortions leave a dead child and in most cases a hurting dysfunctional mother.
Below is a helpful a link for anyone needing counsel after having an abortion.
The internet movie produced by Ray Comfort, 180 is a powerful tool for highlighting the reality and severity of what abortion really is about.
Testimonies are flooding in all the time of how people have changed their view on abortion after watching this 30 minute movie.
The movie is free online. We could send links of it to people or even order copies to distribute.
Thirdly, we could and I feel should have a special Sunday each year in Living Hope called,
“Preciousness of Life Sunday”!
On this day we could approach the whole issue of life and abortion in an informative and constructive way.
I am proposing we begin this on Sunday April 1st 2012 , which is officially the first day of spring and new life.
Perhaps the greatest thing we can do is pray.
Not necessarily pray that all abortions will end, but to pray the Lord,
`Your Kingdom Come, Your Will Be Done On Earth As It Is In Heaven`.
It’s a blessed thought to contemplate and anticipate there is a kingdom coming in which dwells righteousness.
When that day arrives, the nursing child will be safe and not destroyed.
Isaiah 11:8-9
8 The nursing child shall play by the cobra's hole, And the weaned child shall put his hand in the viper's den.
9 They shall not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain, For the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD As the waters cover the sea.
Until then let’s remember when it comes to life in the womb, it is a child we are dealing with and not just a choice. |
